Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana) is a plant, a natural sweetener and sugar substitute in patients with diabetes. Stevia comes from South America, where it was first described by botanist Bertoni, at the end of the 19th century during a scientific expedition in eastern Paraguay. Stevia is a small shrub that reaches height of 40-50 cm, with well-developed and branched root system. In hot tropics it is a perennial plant, but since it belongs to the family Asteraceae, Stevia seeds can be successfully cultivated in temperate zones, including in Europe and North America as annual in the garden or perennial home planted in a pot. The use of Stevia as a sweetener dates back thousands of years in the culture of local Guarani Indians, who called it “honey grass”. In 20 century, the era of striving for healthy lifestyle and looking for alternatives to sugar, Stevia began to be cultivated and consumed in Europe, North America and Asia, in Japan over 40% of sweeteners used in food industry are based on Stevia. The sweetness of Stevia is due to the containing of steviol glycosides. They do not participate in the metabolism and therefore are not required for the absorption of insulin from the blood to cells. This makes Stevia an excellent alternative to sugar in patients with diabetes. Stevia in the form of dried leaves or extracts is useful for people suffering from hypertension, individuals exposed to high radiation or even for people seeking to sustain healthy and natural way of life. In our store you can find and order Stevia seeds to grow in the home or home garden and they will be supplied with a brief guide to any country in the Europe, North America and Australia.

Stevia seeds Growing Information:

Our stevia seeds packets do not sit around. We personally pack the Stevia seeds as it is shipped to be sure of the quality. Stevia seeds not planted within a few weeks should be stored in a rubber-sealed glass jar placed in a cool, dark room or your refrigerator. A desiccant such as silica gel placed in the jar will preserve stevia seeds even longer. The stevia seeds that will get are fresh with tested high germination rates. Stevia seeds can be surface sown in pots indoors. Use a sandy, well-draining soil. Spray the surface of your soil to keep it moist. Then flatten it out without applying much pressure. Sow the stevia seeds on the surface, and cover with clear plastic to seal in moisture. Keep the soil temperature about 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Water only from the bottom to prevent stem rot or damage to germinating stevia seeds. In 6-14 days, tiny stevia seedlings should begin to emerge. Remove the cover when more than half the pots or cells have stevia seedlings showing. At about 8-10 weeks from sowing, the stevia plants may be transplanted. Set your stevia plants at a final spacing of about 1.5 feet apart in full sun. Plants will do best if grown in raised beds. Keep constantly moist without overwatering. Stevia is a frost-sensitive perennial. If left outdoors, mulching will help insulate the plant during the colder months. You can begin harvesting stevia leaves when the plant is young and small. To harvest leaves, either cut off the entire stem, leaving 4 inches of stem behind so that it will re-sprout, or strip off just the fresh leaves. Visit our store to buy stevia seeds.
